Samba Workshop: Carnaval Special
Join us on the 27th and experience the energy and vibrancy of the Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro. Straight from the Sambadrome to the Hague: Julia Solis will teach true Passista-style Samba, dancing to the Samba-Enredos of Carnaval this year. This will be a high intensity workshop with special focus on parading.
Samba for the Soul
We believe that samba is about culture and connection, for everyone. Dance can have such a positive impact on our lives, especially in difficult times. This is why we are offering a free samba workshop. The workshop will be taught by Julia Solis and will focus on foundational skills, technique and choreography.
Julia is a Passista, samba dancer and teacher who has performed in Rio de Janeiro and Europe. She has collaborated with various artists from Brazil, constantly evolving new teaching methods. She is an experienced teacher of authentic Rio-style Samba in the Netherlands and very passionate about samba.
Choreography Masterclass Samba + Afro with Ale and Luciano
To close off this special one-day samba programme, we will end the day with a choreography masterclass. This choreography class will build on the techniques studied earlier in the day and incorporate both Samba and Afro-Brazilian dance. In the upcoming carnaval 2025, many Samba schools have chosen to find inspiration in religion, Afro-Brazilian culture and the Orishas for their themes. Artists also reflect this in their dancing, often incorporating afro movements in their Samba dancing.
Ale Jansen is an internationally known Brazilian Samba artist, teacher and choreographer. In the 2024 Carnaval of Rio de Janeiro, she danced as Madrinha de Bateria for samba school Em Cima Da Hora. She also works internationally as the founder of the Poderosas do Samba. With her extensive experience on teaching samba worldwide, she will share her knowledge and techniques that will help you elevate your samba. This masterclass will focus specifically on passista-style techniques.
Luciano Souza is an artist of Afro-Brazilian dance with over 20 years of experience. He was born and raised in Salvador, Bahia in Brazil and will be sharing his knowledge in his classes, which are about much more than just dance. Afro-Brazilian dance has a substantial vocabulary of movements directly from African ancestors through various traditions. It was first recorded as a dance style in the composition of African religions via rituals or a variety of celebrations. With time, it gained new meanings and expressions and has also incorporated some of the European and native cultures. Connection with your own self, the isolated feeling of the drums and the symbology behind it are the essence. The meaning of movement, music and the story of the Orishas are elements studied in this class.
This class can be taken on its own or as part of a one-day programme. The programme for Sunday 20 October is as follows:

Afro Masterclass with Luciano Souza

George Louzada is an accomplished Samba instructor and dancer. He is the Director of Passistas for samba school Mocidade Independente do Padre Miguel. Under George’s lead, this group has won the Estandarte de Ouro (Gold Standard) award for the Passistas during the Carnaval 2024. He has also won numerous other awards for his work - including the “Professional of the Year” award.
This Samba Masterclass by George Louzada will focus on Passista techniques. This class is a unique opportunity to dance Samba with the guidance of one of the best directors in the world.

Malandro-style samba is a variety of dancing samba that expresses the lifestyle of Malandragem. It involves quick and playful footwork, a confident attitude and smooth, charming movements. While Malandro-style samba is traditionally danced by men, it has been embraced by both genders. In this workshop, Tati Rosa will share the dance style and typical movements of Malandro samba.

During this workshop, Tati Rosa will share her tips on how to dance to various types of music and how to use movement to bring music to life. This workshop will also cover dancing to batucada music and breaks.

Amsterdam: Passista-style Samba Workshop with Julia
The second edition of the Passista Samba Workshop will cover a variety of techniques. We will practice our foundational technique for samba but will also focus on variations, expression, parading and freestyling. This workshop will have a special focus on different steps used in choreography and freestyling of samba. We will cover a variety of commonly used steps, of which you will learn the names, techniques and different variations.
Passista Samba Workshop with Julia
This two-hour workshop will cover a variety of techniques. Part of the workshop will cover foundational techniques of Samba no Pé. In addition to foundational techniques, the workshop will focus on elements such as presentation, parading, variations and dancing to an enredo. In addition to dance technique, the workshop will provide insights into the history and culture of samba and carnaval in Rio de Janeiro.
Amsterdam: Intermediate/Advanced Samba Workshop with Alex Coutinho
Alex Coutinho is a world-famous samba dancer and widely known as one of the best samba trainers. He has revolutionised teaching methods, focussing on refinement of the technique. Between 29 and 31 March, he will be in The Netherlands, where he will give workshops and private classes.
On the 31st of March, he will teach two workshops in Amsterdam. The advanced workshop will cover technique, endurance and musicality. We will use specific training exercises that will help you to improve your samba. Additionally, we will work on our musicality and speed with a variety of movements and choreography.
Amsterdam: Basics of Samba Workshop with Alex Coutinho
Alex Coutinho is a world-famous samba dancer and widely known as one of the best samba trainers. He has revolutionised teaching methods, focussing on refinement of the technique. Between 29 and 31 March, he will be in The Netherlands, where he will give workshops and private classes.
On the 31st of March, he will teach two workshops in Amsterdam. During the basics of samba workshop, he will focus mainly on the basic samba technique. While suitable for beginners, this class is also very useful for advanced dancers who want to improve their dancing technique.
Rotterdam: Samba Workshop with Alex Coutinho
Alex Coutinho is a world-famous samba dancer and widely known as one of the best samba trainers. He has revolutionised teaching methods, focussing on refinement of the technique.
On the 30th of March, he will teach a workshop in Rotterdam. The workshop will focus on samba technique, but will also train endurance and musicality.
Private Classes with Alex Coutinho
Alex Coutinho is a world-famous samba dancer and widely known as one of the best samba trainers. He has revolutionised teaching methods, focussing on refinement of the technique.
He has won various awards for his work, including a gold standard for his role as Director of Passistas with samba school Paraíso do Tuiuti. In March and April of 2024, he is doing his tour of Europe.

Samba Bootcamp with Julita
In collaboration with Latin Soul Dance, we are hosting the first workshop by Julia in the Hague. This will be a 2 hour workshop, suitable for beginners as well as advanced dancers. We will learn basic samba technique and different variations of movements. The workshop aims to let you experience samba culture and will also provide insight into the context of samba.
